Students attend lectures and workshops where the emphasis in the first year is to develop understanding and skills relating to photography.

They will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of photographic media, techniques and processes.  Students will be made aware of both traditional and new technologies. Students will explore relevant images, artefacts and resources relating to a range of art, craft and design.  Students will use sketchbooks/ workbook/ journals to show development of their research and ideas.


They will study:

  • Portraiture photography

  • Studio photography

  • Still life photography

  • Darkroom skills

  • Image manipulation software

  • Leading to photography installation work

  • Moving image in year 2 is a possibility

  • Experimental dark room techniques

  • Landscape photography


Students will explore visual language, gain an awareness of audience and purpose, be able to respond to an issue, theme, concept or idea and work to a brief. They will gain an understanding of camera, film, lenses, filters, and lighting.



Students are able to go onto Foundation Art and Design Courses and Degree Courses at University. From university students go onto careers such as documentary photography, photojournalism, fashion photography, graphic design, animation and multimedia. Some students start up their own businesses.



Students require a passion for Photography and ideally GCSE Art and Design with at least a pass grade.





Choosing photography at EWS will support progression to further and higher education in Photography and Art & Design and related subjects, as well as providing all students with a platform to inspire a lifelong interest in and enjoyment of Photography and Art & Design.
